Al Ain: Helal Al Alawi ruled in his backyard at Al Ain last night with a double that included victory in the feature event of the seven race card.

That race, titled the Zakhir, which was a 1000m sprint handicap, Al Alawi won with Ghazwan Al Khalediah, who carried apprentice rider Hugo Lebouc in the saddle.

Breaking well, Ghazwan Al Khalediah went to the front straightaway and was asked to go 500m out. Once away, Lebouc set him on cruise control and he skipped to a three length victory over the Majed Al Jahoori schooled Shawall with Fernando Jara up. In third place was Ahmed Al Shemaili’s Fabrice Veron ridden Jinjal.

Pat Cosgrave helped Al Alawi score his second of the night with Dinar Al Khalediah, who took the Al Khobaisi 1400m maiden by five and a quarter lengths. The Wathba Stallions Cup (Pvt. Owners) maiden over 1000m, which got racing underway, was won by a stylish four and quarter lengths by Al Shemaili’s Hazeem Al Raed with Antonio Fresu up, while Ernst Oertel and Tadhg O’Shea were victorious in the card closing Al Markhaniya, a 2000m maiden, with AF Mass who crossed the finish with two and a half lengths to spare.

Abdallah Al Hammadi’s Only Smoke lit up the 1600m Al Qattara maiden and took in a first career success on his second start by a massive nine and a half lengths under Bernardo Pinheiro.

Trainer Khalifa Al Neyadi and apprentice Saif Al Balushi combined to land the only other PA handicap on the card the 1600m Al Sarooj with AF Ramz, while Ali Rashid Al Rayhi and Sandro Paiva were victorious in the Al Jimi, the only Thoroughbred contest on the card, which was a 1600m handicap affair.

It was won by the widest margin of all among races contested on Saturday by Faith And Fortune who traveled well to put 12 lengths between him and second placed Wings Of Gold, trained by Erwan Charpy and ridden by Clement Lecoeuvre. In third place, a further three fourths of a length in arrears was Al Shemaili’s Miniaturist with Fresu in the saddle.
